Donald Fida stands in his office the day before his wife, Paulette Fida, dies. "Life will be very hard for me without her," says Fida, "I counted on her in so many ways." Fida was afraid to spend more than an hour away from his wife while she was sick. "I want to be with her until God takes her finally. I feel that if I'm away from her that God will take her when I'm not there."
In her last moment of consciousness Paulette told her husband that she loved him and slipped into a coma. He spent the next 10 days at St. Josephs Hospital in Syracuse by her side.
When Paulette passed away in the hospital, Fida laid in bed with her for three hours. A harp player from St. Josephs came to play for them. "They say hearing is the last thing to go," said Fida.
Fida mourns for his wife. “When you love someone and you lose them, I think that's the hardest part of life.” he says.
In the days since Paulette’s death, Fida’s children have begun cleaning out their house. Fida is still focused on remembering Paulette and worries that his memories of her will fade with time.
Fida is confident they will meet again and says "I think someday we will be together in heaven with God."
